INNOVATION PLAYGROUND: A PLACE TO HAVE FUN, CREATE, & INNOVATE

UMBC was recently named the Maryland State Affiliate for Invention Convention Worldwide - a global K-12 invention education program that builds students’ confidence in problem identification, problem-solving and creativity. This course is an introduction to innovation education and the principles supported by Invention Convention Worldwide.

Opportunities for innovation are all around us! By the end of this course, students will have identified problems in their communities and brainstormed different solutions. We'll start with games and activities to warm up our brains and get in the inventor's mindset. Next we'll work together to reflect on our communities - both their needs and their assets. Students will then work in small groups or pairs to play with different materials as they follow our 7-step invention process. By the end of the program, students will have a greater understanding of how the invention process works and how to apply it to their own lives; and they will have all the skills they need to participate in next year's Maryland Invention Convention competition! We welcome all curious and creative minds to our program - no previous experience required. All you need is to be ready to ask questions, explore new ways of looking at the world around you, and of course, have fun!
