Chess Academy: Chess teaches critical thinking and problem solving, giving students the mental discipline needed to succeed in school and in life. Studies have shown that chess helps kids to improve their math and reading skills. Spend a week learning chess from instructors who know the game and are seasoned tournament competitors.
The summer Chess Academy teaches students of all different skill levels. If you are new to the game, you will learn the rules, but players of all levels will learn new openings, strategy, tactics, and endgames; study master chess champions' games; and play many games against students of similar ability. This course is open to beginner, intermediate, and advanced players wanting to take their game to the next level. Instruction will be differentiated for the different levels as needed, and there will be two instructional staff members in the classroom to make sure that all players receive the attention they need.
This class can be taken multiple times. Returning students taking this courses go deeper into the material and build their understanding, competency, and skill.
All students who sign up for a Chess Academy summer class will receive an official UMBC Chess Team roll out chess board.
LUNCH: Students staying for full day or for both morning and afternoon sessions can bring or buy their lunch. All students will eat lunch on Campus in The Commons, a small food court.
