Year-Round Non-Credit Courses for Middle and High School Students at UMBC

UMBC offers a variety of year-round non-credit courses for middle and high school students, held on weekends, after school, and during holiday breaks. These courses cover a wide range of disciplines, including science, engineering, technology, arts, and humanities, providing students with hands-on learning opportunities.

Participants work alongside UMBC faculty, graduate students, and industry experts, gaining invaluable experience and insight. These programs are designed to help students tap into their creative talents, enhance their critical thinking, and strengthen their academic skills.

    Mastering the College Application Essay: The college application process is more challenging than ever. Colleges are more selective than ever before. As a result, the essay is an invaluable tool for students to use as they seek admission. This workshop will focus on helping your child develop the skills required to write an impactful and successful college application essay. During this workshop, Dr. Chris Vick, will offer your child personalized guidance around drafting, editing, and actually completing the college essay. This workshop is perfect for students at every phase of the process. Whether you are just starting or need some edits, this workshop is perfect for students seeking to take the anxiety out of the essay writing process.

As a result, many students and parents experience a great amount of stress as they approach and manage this milestone. This course is designed to support and empower students going through this time. Dr. Chris Vick will support students as they manage the application process. Participants will receive expert guidance in identifying and actually applying to "right-fit" colleges. This course will take the pain and mystery out the college application process and give students the best possible chance of successfully managing this process.

  • CYBERSECURITY CHALLENGES IN AI -  High School

    The Handbook to Cybersecurity Challenges in AI: Discover how cybersecurity safeguards a world powered by Artificial Intelligence. This course takes learners beyond theory into the real-world challenges of securing intelligent systems. Through interactive labs, guided projects, and case studies, participants will explore how cyber threats exploit AI vulnerabilities from data poisoning and adversarial attacks to model theft and deepfake manipulation. Students will learn to analyze AI risks, design effective defense strategies, and apply ethical frameworks to ensure responsible innovation. 

    This course is taught at the iCode Columbia facility.  The Summer Enrichment Academy at UMBC and iCode Columbia have partnered in the development and delivery of courses and programs to serve pre college students in the fields of computer science, robotics, programming and AI.  iCode is a workforce development pipeline partner for SEA at UMBC graduate students.  All UMBC courses taught at iCode Columbia are UMBC CIRTL trained graduate students.

  • DESIGN YOUR OWN VIDEO GAME! -  Middle School

    Design Your Own Video Game: Making games is even more fun than playing them! Ever dreamed of creating your own video game? Now you can! Step into the world of game design and programming, where creativity meets technology. In this hands-on, one-week course, middle school students will use Scratch and Construct 3 to build interactive games inspired by classics like Flappy Bird, Pac-Man, and Geometry Dash. Along the way, they’ll learn real programming skills while developing problem-solving, logic, and design creativity. Students will explore how games work—learning how loops, variables, and conditions create challenges, movement, and scoring systems. Each day introduces new tools and techniques that build toward their final project: a fully playable game they can proudly share.

  • HOW TO HOMESCHOOL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL -  High School

    How To Homeschool Through High School: This course will focus on helping parents and students navigate high school while homeschooling. We will discuss the high school course requirements of homeschoolers, how to develop a curriculum plan for your students’ learning needs and goals, keeping records (and what records to keep), grades and testing, compiling a transcript and portfolio, and how to integrate students interests into their academic pursuits in high school. This course will be a combination of instructor taught information sessions, along with Q&A and small group discussions. This course is open to parents of both middle and high school students.
