Design Your Future City: An Introduction to Urban Planning & Development: What if you could design the next great city? In this creative, hands-on course, middle school students will step into the role of urban planners to imagine how communities grow, change, and thrive. Through fun activities and teamwork, students will explore how science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) shape everything from housing and parks to public transportation and green spaces.
Throughout the week, students will:
- Explore the foundations of urban design and land use, learning how housing, transportation, and public spaces come together to form a city.
- Experiment with zoning and planning concepts through interactive mapping and creative design challenges.
- Experience civic decision-making in action by simulating how local governments and residents collaborate on city projects.
Along the way, students will gain exposure to real-world careers in public policy, architecture, engineering, and environmental planning, while developing critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills that build a strong foundation for college readiness and future leadership. No experience needed—just curiosity, collaboration, and creativity! Join us for a week of imagination, learning, and community development!
LUNCH: Students staying for full day or for both morning and afternoon sessions can bring or buy their lunch. All students will eat lunch on Campus in The Commons, a small food court.
